Special Educational Needs
“Pupils with Special Educational Needs and/or disabilities develop both their basic skills and very positive attitudes to learning” Ofsted 2011
St Joseph’s is an inclusive school and is committed to ensuring that every child reaches their potential. Early identification of Special Educational Needs, as well as working closely with parents, is essential to this inclusion. Mrs Kitterick is a member of our Senior Leadership Team and is responsible for SEN in school and we also have a designated SEN Governor, Mrs Lorraine Geaney.
The percentage of pupils with Special Educational Needs is 9.6% which is below the national average of 12.1%.
We monitor progress of all our children as they pass through school. Our aim is to identify at the earliest possible stage, those children who may have Special Educational Needs and where necessary, after consultation with parents, devise an individual education plan for the child and if appropriate, involve the special services section of the Kirklees Education Authority. If individual parents have concerns regarding their child’s progress, they can discuss those concerns with their class teacher and our teachers will always find an appropriate time to talk to parents.
Adaptations to our building include a ramp to give access to the school building and a hygiene suite with showering facilities.
